Book Hangover

Usually when you see the meme about book hangover it’s about how you’ve read such a great book that you are still stuck in that world. This is not that kind of hangover. Mine is from a book binge. I over indulged and now I’m paying for it. I read The Fishermen after The readathon was over and I found myself reading the words, but not really taking it in. I chugged it and by the end of the book, I realized I have no idea what I was tasting. Which isn’t fair. From all accounts it’s a great book, it does not deserve my non attention. I have a stack of great books that also don’t deserved to be gulped. I want to read them and savor them. I want to let the words swirl in my mind.

So the question is what do you do? Sometimes I recommend a reread. Go back to a favorite book as a mind cleanse. One of my favorite books to reset is The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern. While I am planning on reading it soon, I’m not sure it’s going to do the trick this time.

Another suggestion is to partake in a kind of a hair of the dog and power through it. Pick up one of your books and push yourself to finish it.

Or swap to a lesser indulgence. Read a genre you’re not usually into or something that is something you consider a guilty pleasure. I’m not a fan of the term guilty pleasure because you like what you like and there isn’t anything to be ashamed of. Read a romance novel, a YA, a light sci fi novel, comics. Anything that’s different from the kind of book you usually go for.  Read a magazine or go for nonfiction perhaps. Change the format you usually read in. Usually into print? Try an ebook. Usually into ebooks? Audiobooks are great too.

Sometimes it works just to take the decision out of your hands. I’ve tried the book jar idea. Or ask a friend for the recommendation. I’ve been known to have my kids pick a book for me. That gets interesting.

Or maybe practice some teetotalism. Take a short break. It’s okay. The world will keep spinning. I’ve been watching Scandal right now. I’m almost done with the last season available on Netflix. I don’t know how to get to season four legally and for free so I shouldn’t be off reading for too long.

What is your book hangover remedy? What is your book version of chorizo and eggs?
